ANDALUSIAN HORSES

PRE, Andalusian type or crossbred?

PRE — Registered Pura Raza Española

A PRE is a purebred Spanish horse officially registered in the PRE Stud Book, with documented parentage and registration. ANCCE manages the official PRE Stud Book in Spain.

Andalusian type

Spanish horses with the look and characteristics of a PRE, but without official PRE registration.

Some may come from PRE bloodlines but were never formally entered in the Stud Book, for example because the registration process was not completed or the parentage could not be formally validated. In those cases, the horse may carry a crossbred passport even though he retains a very recognisable Andalusian type.

Andalusian crossbred

A horse with Iberian influence crossed with another breed. Depending on the cross, he may retain much of the appearance, movement or temperament riders associate with Andalusian horses.

Resgistered PRE

Officially registered purebred Spanish horse with documented pedigree.

Andalusian Type

Spanish horses with the look and characteristics of a PRE, but without official PRE registration.

Andalusian crossbred

A horse with Iberian influence crossed with another breed, while retaining many Andalusian characteristics.

For an amateur rider, an unregistered Andalusian-type horse or a good crossbred can be just as interesting as a registered PRE.

ANDALUSIAN HORSES FOR SALE IN SPAIN

More variety than the breed name suggests

The Spanish market offers a very wide range of Andalusian horses for sale.

You can find registered PRE horses from traditional breeding farms, professionally trained dressage horses, horses used for classical work or working equitation, experienced leisure horses and Spanish crossbreds with a strong Iberian type.

That variety also means that two horses advertised as “Andalusian” may be very different to ride.

One may be highly sensitive and trained to advanced movements. Another may have a simpler education but be much easier for an amateur rider to enjoy. A crossbred may offer less breeding value but an excellent combination of temperament, comfort and price.

This is why, at IberHorse, we do not start with the label alone.

We look at the horse’s real experience, temperament, reactions, health and level of training before deciding whether he is a genuine match for the rider.

WHAT ARE ANDALUSIAN HORSES LIKE?

Beauty attracts attention.
Character creates the partnership.

Official PRE breed information describes the Purebred Spanish Horse as noble, docile and balanced, with good learning ability, agile and expressive movement and a natural aptitude for collection.

Those qualities help explain why Andalusian horses are so popular for dressage, classical riding, working equitation, leisure riding and other disciplines. ANCCE competitions themselves include dressage, working equitation, doma vaquera, high school work, driving and jumping.

But no horse should be selected from a breed description alone.

Presence

The expressive appearance and natural elegance of the Andalusian horse are part of what makes the type so immediately recognisable.

Balance

Many PRE and Andalusian-type horses have a compact build and natural ability to rebalance, which can make collected work particularly comfortable.

Trainability

They are often attentive to people and willing to learn. These qualities that can make the relationship with the rider especially rewarding.

Versatility

Depending on the individual horse, Andalusians can be enjoyed in dressage, working equitation, hacking, classical riding and leisure.

The best Andalusian for an amateur rider is not necessarily the most spectacular one.
It is the one whose temperament and training you can comfortably enjoy.
